EDMONTON, ALBERTA - Canada's National Firearms Association (NFA), the largest and most effective pro-firearms organization in Canada, is calling on all Senators to vote against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's plan to force votes in the Senate on over eleven (11) bills currently being debated.  

 

Motion 261, introduced by Trudeau's official Representative of the Government in the Senate, Senator Peter Harder, would ram through eleven (11) bills, limiting debate and forcing votes earlier than anticipated by normal procedural rules. 

 

"This is an incredible abuse of power, to limit the amount of important debate on so many bills at once," says Sheldon Clare, president of the NFA.  "This is the most sweeping closure motion ever imposed on the Senate since Confederation, and we are calling on all Senators to oppose and defeat this motion."

 

"The Senate is dominated by Trudeau-appointed Senators who claim to be independent - and this is a great test of their independence.  There is no way they should support this motion and allow these bills to be rammed through without proper debate.  That's the entire point of the Senate - to have this open and free debate - and to skip that and force these bills through would be an abuse of their role." concluded Clare. 

 

The NFA has led the fight against Bill C-71 that if passed would bring in a new firearms registry, unnecessarily prohibit several safe and widely used firearms, limit sales on firearms at gunshows and outdoor shows, unnecessarily increase background checks, transfer data from the defunct federal long-gun registry to the provinces to allow the creation of their own long-gun registries, and prohibit already-licensed owners from transporting firearms without additional paperwork each time they wish to do so, among other things.
